Himachal Pradesh Secures $162 Million from ADB to Unlock Travel and Tourism Potential

Himachal Pradesh is set to receive a significant boost to its tourism sector with a $162 million loan approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). According to Vivek Vishal, ADB’s Senior Project Officer, the loan will help unlock the state’s tourism potential by enhancing cultural and heritage sites and developing new infrastructure to strengthen the tourism industry.

The Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Project will focus on promoting heritage and cultural sites in the Mandi and Hamirpur districts, as well as restoring the historic Naggar Castle in Kullu. Plans also include improving public spaces and building a new convention center in Kangra. Travel routes in Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra will be upgraded, incorporating eco-friendly technologies such as solar-powered lighting and electric vehicles, with a focus on improving accessibility for the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities.

The project also involves the creation of wellness centers, recreational facilities, an adventure sports hub, and a water park complex. New cycling trails and other amenities are expected to generate employment opportunities for local communities and boost the local economy.

Additionally, ADB’s support will help strengthen the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board by assisting in the creation of a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing plan. District-level authorities will also receive support to enhance the management of tourist sites, improving destination planning and overall tourism management in the region.
